Artificial intelligence techniques for cancer treatment planning

1988

An artificial intelligence system, NEWCHEM, for the development of new oncology therapies is described. This system takes into account the most recent advances in molecular and cellular biology and in cell-drug interaction, and aims to guide experimentation in the design of new optimal protocols. Further work is being carried out, aimed to embody in the system all the basic knowledge of biology, physiopathology and pharmacology, to reason qualitatively from first principles so as to be able to suggest cancer therapies.

Knowledge Acquisition in Conceptual Ontological Artificial Intelligence System

2009

The paper deals with active knowledge acquisition based on dialogue between AI system and its user. Presented method uses Conceptual Ontological Object Orientated System (COOS) to distinguish differences between concepts and to unequivocally process the input stream. In case of concepts, that do not exist in the system yet, adequate algorithms are being used to position them in ontological core. Separate concepts differ in attributes values or in sets of direct connections with other concepts. The communication aspect of the system deliver information that allow generating proper interpretation for userpsilas statement.

Optimal design of tube hydroforming processes: A fuzzy-logic-based approach

2004

In recent years, tube hydroforming has become an economic and industrially suitable alternative to various traditional stamping processes, in particular for small batch production. In the present paper, an artificial intelligence system based on fuzzy logic was implemented for tube hydroforming process design. The aim was to achieve a process design procedure able to prevent forming defects and guarantee the achievement of the desired final shape of the component. In particular, the process design concerns the internal pressure history and the axial feeding. The fuzzy system is able to provide optimal trajectories for both the controlled parameters, producing a defect-free final part.

Validation of Automated Screening for Referable Diabetic Retinopathy With an Autonomous Diagnostic Artificial Intelligence System in a Spanish Popula…

2020

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to compare the diagnostic performance of an autonomous artificial intelligence (AI) system for the diagnosis of referable diabetic retinopathy (RDR) to manual grading by Spanish ophthalmologists. Methods: Subjects with type 1 and 2 diabetes participated in a diabetic retinopathy (DR) screening program in 2011 to 2012 in Valencia (Spain), and two images per eye were collected according to their standard protocol. Mydriatic drops were used in all patients. Retinal images—one disc and one fovea centered—were obtained under the Medical Research Ethics Committee approval and de-identified. Exams were graded by the autonomous AI system (IDx-DR, Coralville, Io…

Dynamic Pattern Recognition in Sport by Means of Artificial Neural Networks

2008

Behavioural processes like those in sports, motor activities or rehabilitation are often the object of optimization methods. Such processes are often characterized by a complex structure. Measurements considering them may produce a huge amount of data. It is an interesting challenge not only to store these data, but also to transform them into useful information. Artificial Neural Networks turn out to be an appropriate tool to transform abstract numbers into informative patterns that help to understand complex behavioural phenomena. The contribution presents some basic ideas of neural network approaches and several examples of application. The aim is to give an impression of how neural meth…

Diagnostic Performance of an Artificial Intelligence System in Breast Ultrasound.

2021

Objectives We study the performance of an artificial intelligence (AI) program designed to assist radiologists in the diagnosis of breast cancer, relative to measures obtained from conventional readings by radiologists. Methods A total of 10 radiologists read a curated, anonymized group of 299 breast ultrasound images that contained at least one suspicious lesion and for which a final diagnosis was independently determined. Separately, the AI program was initialized by a lead radiologist and the computed results compared against those of the radiologists. Results The AI program's diagnoses of breast lesions had concordance with the 10 radiologists' readings across a number of BI-RADS descri…

AMMINISTRAZIONE PUBBLICA E SISTEMI DI INTELLIGENZA ARTIFICIALE: ALCUNE RIFLESSIONI

2022

This paper aims to examine how public administrations tend to use artificial intelligence systems, in the light of the legal framework and jurisprudential developments. Taking the cue from a distinction between the cases in which the aforementioned systems support the administrative decision and those in which they tend to replace the ‘human decider’ it intends to point out the utility of a distinction between administration for measures and performance administration, for the purposes of allocating responsibilities for eventually produced damage
